Something for everyone in Kota Kinabalu


Kota Kinabalu, also known as KK locally, is the capital of Malaysia’s Sabah state in Northwestern Borneo. Partly surrounded by rain forests and lined with gorgeous beaches. Boasting bustling markets, Breathtaking crimson sunsets and a melting pot of cultures and people. You can be sure to find a menagerie of foods just waiting to be discovered.
Whether you are in the mood for street food or looking for a night on the town there is something for everyone with Kota Kinabalu local food.

Though Asian fusion can be found all around, what if you are in the mood for some western food in the middle of Southeast Asian? No problem. Check out some of the many options downtown or a short bike ride away.

At Little Italy, you can find some of the best Zuppa Di Mare and tiramasu. Missing pizza, this is the place for made from scratch pie.
Mediterranean more your taste, walk right into the cosy little Chili Vanilla Cafe. The Fantastic food and generous portions make it a local KK restaurant favourite, where you will you can find an assortment of Hungarian dishes, smoked duck, calamari, gluten free options, even just a burger. The spicy Chocolate beef is not to be missed.

Looking for a people watching perch? El Centro is one of the best at night on the weekends. If you have a taste for mexican, a panini or even a salad, this great place to grab a bite to eat and watch the crowd with a tasty dink in your hand. Don’t pass up the daiquiris, some of the best.
After a wonderful day exploring all the sites and sounds of Kota Kinabalu and looking for the perfect view of the sunset simply head over to Kinabalu National Park and climb Mount Kinabula which stands over 13,400 ft above the sea level and is the highest point in Malaysia. Not up for the hike? No trip to Kota Kinabalu is complete without witnessing the beautiful fiery sun setting over the South China Sea right on the beach with a drink in hand. There is not a more popular spot for that in all of KK than Sunset Bar at Shangri La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa. It gets crowded right before the sun goes down but well worth it. Stay after the sunset and you will be rewarded with drink special and a little more quiet.
The Night time market is another wonderful people watching spot and has some of the best, cheapest and most interesting choices in food around. Barbequed squid or ray and so many seafood options. Vegetarians are not forgotten here either. All cooked up right before your eyes and don’t forget to pick up the local Tiger beer to wash it all down.

One trip to Kota Kinabalu will not be enough to take in all the sites, sounds, tastes or the local area. It will keep you coming back for more and there is always more to explore.
